How likely is a revote on transitional rules for Swedish citizenship?
At least three out of four opposition parties are demanding that parliament vote once again on the issue of transitional arrangements for the new stricter citizenship rules. The Local asked the parliamentary parties how likely this is to happen.
On 29 April, the Riksdag adopted a text that drastically tightened the conditions for access to Swedish citizenship. Without a transitional clause, pending applications were suspended in a legal vacuum.
In Stockholm, Parliament adopted on Wednesday 29 April new rules that tighten up the criteria for obtaining Swedish nationality. The new legislation will come into force on 6 June and will apply retroactively to those who have already filed a compliant file, a first in Europe. More than 100,000 people waiting for a passport are affected.
