Suzanne Carlson, a maritime ferry operator from Coos Bay, Oregon, launched the Oregon Waterway Preparedness Pledge to promote water safety, environmental awareness, and personal preparedness based on lessons from Pacific Northwest waterways.
Carlson stated, 'Working on the water teaches humility. You learn very quickly that nature is always in charge. Your job is to stay prepared and stay focused.'
The U.S. Coast Guard reported more than 3,800 recreational boating incidents nationwide in the latest annual period.
Carlson encourages individuals and community members to take the Oregon Waterway Preparedness Pledge and share the toolkit with others.
