Pro-Imran Khan March Starts in Pakistan's Northwest
More than 5,000 supporters are traveling in convoy after talks with the government collapsed, while authorities block access routes with containers.
On Sunday, more than 5,000 supporters of imprisoned former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan began a multi-day march from Lakki Marwat toward Islamabad, demanding his release after government talks failed.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi is leading the convoy toward Islamabad after negotiations between the federal government and Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party ended in a deadlock.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi warned that organizers would be held accountable for potential violence as authorities imposed Section 144 and blocked routes into Islamabad with shipping containers.
The PTI claims approximately 2,000 workers have been arrested amid the standoff, while Khan remains imprisoned at Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail facing more than 100 cases his party maintains are politically motivated.
This showdown risks deepening Pakistan's political instability amid a surge in militant attacks by the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, while concerns over the 73-year-old Khan's health remain central to the dispute.
