Support for British Monarchy Falls to Lowest Level in More than 30 Years
Ipsos said support has dropped most sharply among 18- to 34-year-olds, while 60% still say King Charles is doing a good job.
On Friday, June 19, 2026, Ipsos published a poll finding that 55 percent of Britons support retaining the monarchy, marking the lowest level since 1993, while support for a republic has risen to 27 percent.
Generational divides characterize the shift, with only 33 percent of 18- to 34-year-olds backing the institution compared to 74 percent of those over 55, and 45 percent of younger respondents favoring a republic.
Despite falling institutional support, King Charles III maintains 60 percent approval and Prince William reaches 71 percent, yet commentators link the decline to controversies including Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor's arrest on suspicion of misconduct in public office.
Former U.K. government minister Alan Milburn recently warned the country is 'at risk of a lost generation,' with over one million young people not in education, employment, or training—the highest level since 2013.
Ipsos noted that younger people are 'much less supportive' than predecessors, indicating a structural rather than temporary shift in attitudes, leaving the Royal Family facing the challenge of proving its relevance to future generations.
