3 state troopers plead not guilty to charges connected to death of recruit after boxing match
An independent investigator said the boxing drills were unauthorized and unsupervised, and prosecutors say the four face involuntary manslaughter charges.
- On Thursday, Sgt. Jennifer Penton, Trooper Edwin Rodriguez, and Trooper David Montanez were arraigned in Worcester Superior Court on charges of involuntary manslaughter and causing serious bodily injury. All three entered not guilty pleas.
- The charges stem from the September 2024 death of 25-year-old recruit Enrique Delgado-Garcia, who suffered a massive brain bleed after an "unauthorized, unapproved and unsupervised" boxing match at the Massachusetts State Police Academy in New Braintree.
- Investigators alleged the troopers failed to intervene during the sparring session, while Penton faces additional perjury charges for allegedly providing false grand jury testimony. Trooper Casey LaMonte, the fourth charged officer, is scheduled to appear April 14.
- Judge J. Gavin Reardon Jr. released the three troopers on personal recognizance bail with no-contact conditions. The department suspended boxing training and commissioned an independent review by the International Association of Chiefs of Police.
- Criminal charges for academy deaths remain rare. An Associated Press investigation, "Dying to Serve," found more than 30 recruits have died since 2015 due to grueling exercises, heat, or medical conditions.
