In May, a grassroots initiative in Krakow led to a referendum that ousted the then mayor, Aleksander Miszalski which set a nationwide precedent. On Sunday, Krakow voted again and it is now clear who will face off in the second round.
"(Monika Piątkowska – ed.) achieved a decent result, and she started with a dozen or so percent support (...). Let's wait for the second round, for the results of these elections. The gap has narrowed compared to the polls," said Civic Coalition senator Grzegorz Schetyna in an interview with Mariusz Piekarski.
Independent candidate Łukasz Gibała won the first round of early elections in Kraków on Sunday, the second largest city in Poland, following the second round of elections on 11 October, in which he will face a candidate supported by Prime Minister Donald Tusk's Civic Coalition, reports Politico.
