Sugar Recall: 1.7 Million Pounds Recalled over Possible Allergens
The Class II recall covers light brown and powdered sugar sold under three brands after a possible wheat contamination, the FDA said.
The Food and Drug Administration recalled nearly 1.7 million pounds of sugar across 8 states due to "potential wheat kernel contamination" affecting United, Good & Gather, and Crystal Sugar brands.
Wheat is one of the nine major food allergens tracked by the Food and Drug Administration, and reactions in allergic individuals can be serious.
Recalled products include 50-lb bags of United Light Brown Sugar, 2-lb bags of Good & Gather Light Brown Sugar, and 25-lb bags of Crystal Sugar Powdered Sugar distributed across Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas.
The Food and Drug Administration classified this as a Class II recall, which "may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences," though "the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote."
While the Food and Drug Administration does not list specific retailers, Good & Gather is a Target-owned food brand sold exclusively at Target, helping consumers locate affected products.
