A surpise “downburst” formed over Sampson County late Sunday afternoon, bringing fast and heavy torrential rains and gusty winds that dropped trees and left one church without its steeple. Tony Rackley, chairman of Mount Vernon Baptist Church’s building and grounds committee and a deacon, was at the Faison Highway fellowship hall for a youth and children’s event when the rains came.
