Sudan: Kordofan Cannot Become 'Another El Fasher,' Türk Warns
More than 45,000 people have fled Kordofan amid fighting that has killed at least 269 civilians and caused famine and hospital closures, the UN reported.
- On Thursday, the United Nations warned the Kordofan region, central Sudan, could face another wave of mass atrocities as UN human rights chief Volker Turk said it is truly shocking to see history repeating itself.
- Since April 2023, the conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces has pushed into Kordofan, a strategic corridor linking RSF-held Darfur and government areas; the RSF seized Bara since late October and claimed Babnusa earlier this week.
- OHCHR has documented at least 269 civilian deaths from bombardment and killings, while an RSF drone strike, El Obeid killed 45 and an SAF aerial strike, Kauda killed at least 48; displaced people have fled in the past month.
- Hospitals have been overrun with most of al-Nuhud Hospital, West Kordofan, out of action; Kadugli and Dilling, South Kordofan, are besieged with confirmed famine in Kadugli while all parties block humanitarian access.
- The conflict has created one of the world's largest humanitarian crises, with some 30 million needing aid and tens of thousands killed, while United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres called El Fasher a `crime scene`.
