MTA raises subway and bus base fare to $3 and increases tolls by 7.5% to $7.46 to support labor costs and transition to OMNY tap-to-pay system.
- On Tuesday the Metropolitan Transportation Authority board approved raising the single subway and bus fare to $3 from $2.90, passing the measure with an 11-0 vote and two abstentions.
- MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber said two-thirds of operating expenses cover labor costs for 70,000 employees and officials called the increase roughly a 2% annual rise.
- Fare tables show the following increases: tolls will rise 7.5% to $7.46, single-ride tickets to $3.50, express bus trips to $7.25, and LIRR and Metro-North fares up to 8%.
- With the OMNY rollout, the agency will retire the MetroCard after Dec. 31, cap weekly charges at $35 and $17.50 for reduced-fare riders, eliminate coin payments and the 30-day unlimited option.
- After public comment, the board lowered the seven-day fare cap from $36 to $35 amid a mayoral race focused on high living costs, with the change set for January 4, 2026.
