California’s 10% Ticket Resale Price Cap Dies in Senate Committee, as StubHub’s State Lobbying Spend Hits $3.4M This Year
StubHub spent a record $3.4 million in California lobbying against the measure, which would have capped resale markups at 10% above face value.
On Thursday, the California Senate Appropriations Committee blocked AB 1720, the California Fans First Act, which aimed to cap concert ticket resale prices in the state.
StubHub spent a record $3.4 million on lobbying in California this year to defeat the bill, including $2.6 million in the most recent quarter.
Supported by the National Independent Venue Association and Live Nation, the amended bill would have limited resale prices to 10 percent above face value for venues with 3,000 or fewer seats.
State Assembly Member Matt Haney expressed dismay at the failure, stating he will "keep working with the coalition of fans, artists, and venues" to push for solutions.
While California's attempt stalled, Maine, Vermont, and Washington, D.C. recently adopted similar resale price caps, and Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey introduced legislation to address ticket scalping.
