Stripe-led payments blockchain Tempo goes live with AI agent protocol
Tempo launched its mainnet and an open-source protocol to enable fast, low-cost stablecoin payments and autonomous AI agent transactions, supporting cross-border and large-group payouts.
- On Wednesday, Tempo launched its mainnet, moving its Stripe- and Paradigm-backed stablecoin payment system into live use and introduced the open-source Machine Payments Protocol co-developed with Stripe.
- The rollout follows a December testnet where Mastercard, UBS, Klarna and Visa experimented, and Tempo raised $500 million at a $5 billion valuation in 2025.
- Built for high throughput, the Tempo network supports low-cost payments and the open-source Machine Payments Protocol handles both fiat and crypto, integrating with Stripe's AI payments infrastructure.
- Tempo aims to simplify stablecoin transfers, enabling AI agents to pay autonomously for services, while Mastercard's $1.8 billion BVNK acquisition signals rising industry investment.
- Tempo's cross-rail design positions it amid rivals building alternatives, with Coinbase designing its x402 network and Google releasing a payments scheme including cards and stablecoins.
