UN refugee chief urges action from Security Council so displacement no longer crosses generations
Barham Salih says humanitarians can ease suffering, but only the Security Council can help end conflicts that have displaced more than 117 million people.
- On Friday, refugee chief Barham Salih urged the 15-member Security Council to end conflicts driving displacement. Salih, a former president of Iraq, told members they hold a "unique responsibility to help make peace possible."
- More than 117 million people are currently forced to flee their homes globally due to ongoing crises. Salih pointed to conflicts in Sudan, Ukraine, and the Mideast as primary drivers of displacement.
- Sudan's war remains the world's largest displacement crisis, with 12 million people, while recent Mideast escalation forced over 130,000 Yemenis to flee. Generations in Congo and near Tindouf, Algeria remain trapped in cycles of violence.
- Salih stated that success cannot mean simply keeping people caught in war alive or maintaining long-term camps. Instead, UNHCR's ambition is to prevent displacement and create conditions where people can rebuild their lives.
- The refugee chief acknowledged his goal to reduce long-term displacement by half by 2035 is ambitious. Ultimately, Salih emphasized that UNHCR's purpose is to create conditions where people no longer need agency support.
