Bystanders Chase Down Suspect After Stolen Tesla Speeds Down Boardwalk in San Diego
The driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI, hit-and-run, vehicle theft and felony evading after bystanders detained him, police said.
- On Monday, Juan Antonio Gonzaba drove a stolen Tesla onto the Pacific Beach boardwalk in San Diego, striking a 25-year-old pedestrian who sustained serious injuries. Police arrested the 39-year-old after bystanders detained him as he attempted to flee.
- San Diego Police Department officers initiated pursuit shortly after 12:30 p.m. Monday after spotting the vehicle traveling south on Mission Boulevard. Gonzaba struck an electrical transformer before the Tesla entered the crowded boardwalk at high speed.
- Bystander Alex Srour, riding his bike on the boardwalk, heard screams and chased Gonzaba after he abandoned the vehicle. Srour tackled him to the ground and recorded the suspect until officers arrived to take him into custody.
- The injured pedestrian remains hospitalized with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Prosecutors charged Gonzaba with four felonies including driving under the influence, hit-and-run, vehicle theft, and felony evading.
- Court records show Gonzaba has 18 previous criminal cases dating to 2009, with recent cases involving burglary and assault. He is scheduled for arraignment Wednesday and remains in custody at San Diego Central Jail.
