Stephen Harper Says He Wishes He Came Up With Carney’s CEO Summit
Harper said the summit could help draw $1 trillion in new investment over five years and praised Carney’s effort as a first of its kind.
On Tuesday, former Prime Minister Stephen Harper praised Prime Minister Mark Carney's Canada Investment Summit in Toronto, saying he wished he had conceived the idea himself.
During the summit, the Carney government announced it aims to attract $1 trillion in new investments into Canada over five years, already securing nearly $500 billion in commitments.
To entice capital, Carney announced plans to sell off Canada's four largest airports—Toronto-Pearson, Montreal-Trudeau, Vancouver, and Calgary—while slashing the marginal effective tax rate on new business investments from 13 per cent to 6.4 per cent.
A coalition called The Many and The Money Network protested the summit, warning that Carney is advancing a "privatization fire sale for the super rich" and creating a "rigged system."
Efforts to court American investors arrive amid a protracted trade war with the United States and President Donald Trump's repeated threats to turn Canada into the "51st" American state.
