Stena Line Orders Two Hybrid RoPax Ferries From China
The ships will carry 1,500 passengers each and are designed for later conversion to full electric operation.
- Stena Line ordered two hybrid E-Flexer RoPax ferries from China Merchants Industry Weihai Shipyard for delivery in 2030, intended for its Gothenburg-Frederikshavn route between Sweden and Denmark.
- The new vessels replace Stena Danica and Stena Jutlandica, which entered service in 1984 and 1996. Stena Line CEO Niclas Mårtensson stated the order helps future-proof CO2 reduction targets amid stricter environmental requirements.
- Each 214.5-metre vessel will accommodate 1,500 passengers and provide 2,750 lane metres of freight capacity across three vehicle decks. The 27.8-metre-wide ferries include 132 cabins for passengers and crew.
- Utilizing hybrid propulsion, the vessels will be prepared for conversion to fully electric operation once charging infrastructure becomes available. Stena Line expects the additional freight capacity to support its planned relocation to a new port in Arendal.
- China Merchants Industry Weihai Shipyard has built 15 E-Flexers to date. The two new vessels will become the sixth and seventh in Stena Line's fleet, joining three operating on the Irish Sea and two between Sweden and Poland.
