Israel indicts Jewish man accused of attacking Christian nun in Jerusalem
The attack drew wide condemnation from Christian leaders and prompted Israel’s attorney general to seek continued detention of the suspect.
The State Attorney's Office indicted 36-year-old Yona Schreiber on Thursday for attacking a nun in Jerusalem's Old City, alleging he pushed and kicked the woman because she wore a religious habit.
Widespread condemnation followed video footage of the assault; Israel Police arrested Schreiber last week, and prosecutors charged him with assault motivated by religious hostility.
This attack follows several recent incidents targeting Christian symbols and figures, including soldiers desecrating religious statues in recent weeks; religious groups have documented rising harassment against clergy.
Wadie Abunassar, coordinator of the Holy Land Christian Forum, characterized these attacks as a growing phenomenon, expressing "great anger on the system" over insufficient deterrence against such violence.
Last month, the Foreign Ministry appointed Ambassador George Deek as special envoy to the Christian world, emphasizing Israel's commitment to preserving religious freedom and the dignity of all religions.
Again and again Christians in Jerusalem are being attacked or spat at. The recent violence on a nun caused great indignation. Now, charges have been filed against the suspect.
