UK says its Cyprus bases will not be used in offensive operations: Cypriot spokesperson
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer assured Cyprus its bases will not support offensive strikes amid the Iran crisis, reinforcing preventive security measures, officials said.
- On March 21, Britain said RAF Akrotiri would not be involved in its defensive agreement with the United States after a Saturday call and reiterated that British bases in Cyprus will not be used for offensive operations.
- Facing recent attacks, the UK authorised U.S. use of RAF Fairford, England, and Diego Garcia, joint U.S.-UK base in the Indian Ocean, for defensive strikes after an Iranian-type Shahed drone hit RAF Akrotiri on March 2.
- Stressing sovereignty, Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the security of the Republic of Cyprus is fundamental and that measures to strengthen prevention have been decided; he also stated that the British Bases in Cyprus will not be used for offensive operations.
- Local activists said the Akrotiri strike left residents scared and confused, some moving away, as the UK sent a Type 45 destroyer and a warship manned by more than 200 with two Royal Navy Wildcat helicopters armed with Martlet missiles.
- Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said Saturday the policy remains defensive, 'We will not be drawn into a wider conflict'; a defence source reported an Iranian missile attack toward Diego Garcia.
