‘Star Wars’ and ‘Indiana Jones’ Rarities Are in Lawrence Kasdan’s University Archive

The archive includes over 150 boxes with scripts, photos, and props, featuring two Star Wars scripts, available to researchers by late 2026, curator Phil Hallman said.

  • Soon, researchers and documentary filmmakers will be able to access Lawrence Kasdan's papers at his alma mater, the University of Michigan, with library staff working chronologically so his earliest works and two Star Wars scripts can be accessed first.
  • Lawrence Kasdan said researchers and documentary filmmakers can follow the evolution of specific films in the archive, which includes unproduced scripts and the Raiders of the Lost Ark screenplay.
  • The archive contains rare production materials and props from Kasdan's films, including photographs believed to be the only record of a deleted Kevin Costner scene, audio cassette recordings with Steven Spielberg and George Lucas, Polaroids, and Costner's cowboy hat from Silverado.
  • Archivists are about a quarter of the way through cataloging holdings that document Kasdan's work with Indiana Jones and Yoda, and Phil Hallman said the rest should be processed with hopes Kasdan will visit.
  • Kasdan's papers join the University of Michigan Library's Screen Arts Mavericks and Makers Collection alongside Orson Welles, Robert Altman and Jonathan Demme, and Kasdan said `To be there, held in the same place as those wonderful directors, is really a great honor.
