All Blacks Injury Toll Worsens as Caleb Clarke Heads Home Before Springboks Tests
Caleb Clarke will undergo surgery after a shoulder tendon injury, leaving the All Blacks without another outside back before the first Test.
Winger Caleb Clarke is returning home after rupturing a shoulder tendon on Tuesday in the 54-point win against the Sharks in Durban. The All Blacks confirmed on Friday that he requires surgery.
Clarke is the third player departing the tour early; Hooker George Bell suffered a calf injury before the Stormers match, while Billy Proctor sustained a broken shoulder blade during that game.
The All Blacks face the Bulls at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday, with the Pretoria-based side drafting Springboks Elrigh Louw and Johan Grobbelaar into their matchday squad.
Coach Dave Rennie expressed confidence in the team's remaining six outside backs despite Clarke's exit, noting the Bulls have a tough forward pack and a mindset "prepared to play."
Saturday's fixture serves as the All Blacks' final preparation before their Test series against the Springboks on August 22, though Test regular Will Jordan remains a doubt due to a back injury.
