Sports - Haugset takes Women’s Tour de France yellow jersey with long solo breakaway
The 27-year-old Norwegian won after an 88-kilometre solo breakaway and now leads the race by 2:02, officials said.
On Monday, Sigrid Haugset of Uno-X Mobility claimed stage 3 of the Women's Tour de France, seizing the race leader's yellow jersey after an impressive long-range solo breakaway.
Haugset initiated her solo effort on the Col de la Savine with 87km remaining, distancing herself from a breakaway group of 11 riders during the 156.5km course between Geneva and Poligny.
Team SD Worx-Protime rider Lotte Kopecky launched a vigorous chase, closing the gap to 15 seconds with 10km remaining, but Haugset surged again to finish 84 seconds ahead of the Belgian.
Haugset now leads the general classification over Kim Le Court Pienaar, while Lorena Wiebes, winner of the first two stages, dropped to 67th place after finishing more than 20 minutes behind.
Sporting the yellow jersey, Haugset heads into Tuesday's 21km individual time trial between Gevrey-Chambertin and Dijon, with the race finishing Sunday in Nice.
On Monday, August 3, Sigrid Ytterhus Haugset won in the third stage of the Tour de France. The Norwegian triumphed in front of Lotte Kopecky and Marianne Vos.
