Sporting Kansas City Lands Brazilian Forward Andre Luiz
The 24-year-old forward had seven goals and six assists for Rio Ave FC before moving to Olympiacos last January, Sporting KC said.
On Tuesday, Sporting Kansas City announced the signing of 24-year-old Brazilian forward Andre Luiz as a Designated Player, shattering the club's franchise transfer record.
Reports indicate the club paid $18 million upfront, with the deal potentially reaching $22 million based on performance metrics, dwarfing the previous $7.5 million record for Alan Pulido in 2019.
Luiz previously starred for Olympiacos and Rio Ave FC, bringing pace and technical ability to the roster. The Rio de Janeiro native began his career with America Football Club before progressing through Brazil's academy system.
David Lee, Sporting Kansas City president of soccer operations and general manager, confirmed a five-year contract through the 2030-31 season. The deal remains pending receipt of Luiz's visa and International Transfer Certificate.
Currently last in the Western Conference, Sporting Kansas City is aggressively rebuilding under new principal owner Peter Mallouk, aiming to add quality players in their prime years.
