Homeowners Warned as Spider Invasion Set to Begin
Experts say male house spiders are moving indoors to find mates and shelter, with more than 650 species in the UK and only 12 harmful to humans.
The official start of spider mating season this month is driving spiders from their webs, with activity peaking between late August and October. Adult males are currently leaving hiding places to search for mates.
During autumn, spiders are more frequently spotted running across floors or climbing walls as cooler temperatures encourage them to seek shelter indoors. This phenomenon is largely driven by male spiders searching for females.
Britain is home to more than 650 spider species, most of which are harmless. Only 12 can cause any harm to humans, while large species like the Giant House Spider and Daddy Long-legs Spider are not dangerous.
Check for obvious gaps or cracks around window frames, exterior doors, pipes and vents, advises Wasp-Eze General Manager Mike Rondas. He suggests sealing these entry points and using draught excluders to limit access for crawling insects.
Regularly vacuuming corners, behind furniture and along skirting boards removes webs and egg sacs. Experts emphasize that reducing indoor food sources helps prevent spider infestations, as spiders are attracted to places where prey is plentiful.
