South Korean Leader Says Trump Wants to Turn Attention to North After Iran Deal
Lee said Trump sees a renewed push as necessary because North Korea’s nuclear program has advanced and past denuclearization efforts have fallen short.
- On Friday, President Lee Jae Myung reported that President Donald Trump intends to refocus on the North Korea nuclear issue following their 90-minute dinner in France earlier this week.
- The summit in France was part of Lee's 10-day diplomatic tour of Europe that concluded Thursday, during which Trump emphasized it was regrettable that measures were not taken before North Korea acquired nuclear weapons.
- Lee told Trump the North Korea nuclear issue "should not be approached in the same way that other countries have been dealt with," explaining that "virtually all of South Korea's channels of communication with North Korea are currently cut off."
- Suggesting Washington propose realistic measures, Lee argued that "the U.S. at this point appears to be the only party capable of engaging North Korea in dialogue" and urged a phased approach to Pyongyang's advanced capabilities.
- During the tour, Lee asked Pope Leo to visit South Korea for the 2027 World Youth Day in Seoul and requested that the Pope pursue a visit to North Korea, including the Demilitarized Zone.
