South Korea Proposes Record $597 Billion 2027 Budget to Supercharge AI Investment
The 821 trillion won plan sets up semiconductor and AI megaprojects, a Future Fund and spending reforms to support growth.
On Tuesday, South Korea unveiled its most aggressive fiscal spending plan on record, setting total government expenditure for 2027 at 821 trillion won to strengthen its technological edge amid the global AI race.
President Lee Jae-myung championed this expansionary policy shift, pivoting away from three years of fiscal austerity as unprecedented profits from chipmakers Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix bolstered national tax revenue.
Budget Minister Park Hong-geun established a "Future Fund" to manage 162.3 trillion won in excess tax revenue, directing resources toward semiconductors, physical AI, and essential industrial infrastructure.
Officials project the plan will reduce South Korea's debt-to-GDP ratio to 48.3 percent, though the government must submit the proposal to the National Assembly by Thursday for legislative approval.
