- South Africa's government described him `a distinguished servant of the nation` and President Cyril Ramaphosa said his life `ended prematurely and traumatically` in `evidently suspicious circumstances`.
- A veteran politician, Nkosinathi Emmanuel `Nathi` Mthethwa had a long career as Police Minister and Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, campaigned against apartheid, rose through the ANC, and allied with former President Jacob Zuma.
