South Africa unveils ETA system to simplify international travel

The digital travel platform uses biometric verification and risk assessment to speed lawful entry and strengthen border controls, officials said.

  • On Wednesday, President Cyril Ramaphosa and Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber launched South Africa's Electronic Travel Authorisation system at OR Tambo International Airport, aiming to modernize travel while strengthening border security.
  • Operation Vulindlela provides the framework for this reform, which Ramaphosa views as essential for economic growth by removing bureaucratic barriers to tourism, trade, and investment.
  • The pilot programme processed 216 204 applications and identified 6 126 fraudulent applications, which were rejected. Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille reported travellers using dedicated ETA lanes were processed in under 60 seconds.
  • Expanding beyond the initial airport rollout, government plans to extend the system to land and sea ports and bring study and work visa categories onto the platform.
  • "Today's launch is about much more than visas. It is about the future of our country," Ramaphosa concluded, emphasizing the system balances global competitiveness with rigorous security controls.
