Minister Motsoaledi Outlines South Africa's Response to Hantavirus Threats
Authorities are tracing 42 contacts after seven confirmed and five suspected cases, while one British patient remains in stable condition, officials said.
Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi addressed parliament on a Hantavirus outbreak linked to the MV Hondius cruise ship, which carried 147 individuals from 23 nations; current data indicates seven confirmed cases, five suspected cases, and three total fatalities.
The initial outbreak occurred during a voyage from Argentina to Cape Verde, resulting in three deaths including a Dutch couple and a British tourist. Patients exhibited non-specific symptoms before rapidly deteriorating, complicating early identification.
Authorities began contact-tracing on Saturday, May 2, before confirming the diagnosis. Officials have successfully traced 42 of 62 possible contacts, who remain under observation for fever during the six-week incubation period.
Reassuring the public on Wednesday, Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi and Prof Lucille Blumberg stated South African rats do not carry Hantavirus. The virus remains endemic to the Americas, posing a low risk of national emergency.
The World Health Organization categorized the global threat level as "low" on May 4, though EFF MP Naledi Chirwa raised concerns about South Africa's border security protocols. Authorities maintain proper containment procedures were followed.
In response to the hantavirus outbreak reported on an international cruise ship, the Department of Health assured on Tuesday that it remains vigilant and has monitoring and diagnostic protocols in place for possible cases on the Island.
