Report: Lions, Sam LaPorta Break Off Contract Extension Talks
LaPorta has 14 catches for 144 yards through three games, and Detroit could use the franchise tag if talks do not resume.
The Detroit Lions and tight end Sam LaPorta paused contract negotiations until the offseason after negotiation pushes on Friday and Saturday failed to produce an agreement.
After LaPorta overcame back surgery and proved his health this year, the tight end pursued a contract matching the Green Bay Packers' four-year, $75 million deal for Tucker Kraft.
Playing about 90% of Detroit's offensive snaps this season, LaPorta has 14 catches for 144 yards, building on his impressive rookie campaign of 86 receptions for 889 yards and 10 touchdowns.
With LaPorta wanting to fully focus on the field, both sides agreed to postpone discussions, though the Lions retain the option to negotiate further during the season.
Barring a significant breakthrough, LaPorta is positioned to enter free agency in 2027 as one of the most sought-after players regardless of position, joining a rare group of prime-age tight ends reaching the open market.
