Woman jailed for blackmailing ex-Tottenham Hotspur footballer Son Heung-min with pregnancy claim
Yang and accomplice Yong extorted about 300 million won from Son Heung-min using false pregnancy claims; Yang sentenced to 4 years and Yong to 2 years in prison.
- On Dec. 8, Yonhap reported that Seoul Central District Court sentenced Yang, a woman in her 20s, to four years and Yong, her 40s ex-boyfriend, to two years for blackmailing Son Heung-min.
- The scheme began in June last year when Yang extorted 300 million won from Son Heung-min and between March and May this year Yang and Yong tried to extort 70 million won more, prompting Son to report them.
- Media noted that Yang spent extorted funds on luxury goods after another unnamed man first targeted by Yang failed to respond, and Son Heung-min testified at a closed trial session in November.
- In sentencing remarks the bench stated Yang never confirmed whose child she was pregnant with and called the crime an egregious use of Son Heung-min's celebrity, causing considerable psychological pain.
- The pair have been in custody since May following their arrest and indictment after Son reported the extortion attempts, with a May 17 image showing Yang and Yong at Seoul Central District Court and Yong charged with attempted blackmail.
