Some Evacuees Allowed to Go Home as Crews Continue Fighting Fire Near Lytton, B.C.
Lighter winds let some evacuees return while the fire has grown to 704 hectares and closed Highway 1, officials said.
- On Friday, Lytton officials allowed some evacuated residents to return home as cooler weather and lighter winds slowed the 704-hectare Saw Creek wildfire. Mayor Denise O Connor reported improved conditions, though approximately 212 properties remain under evacuation alert.
- The fire broke out Friday, days before the fifth anniversary of the 2021 inferno that razed 90 per cent of the village and killed two people. Residents leveraged lessons from that disaster to coordinate evacuations more effectively this time.
- BC Wildfire Service has deployed 150 firefighting personnel, 10 helicopters, and 53 structure protection personnel to secure the Saw Creek wildfire perimeter. Crews use direct attack methods to establish control lines along the fire's north and south flanks.
- Thompson-Nicola Regional District director Tricia Thorpe confirmed at least one structure was lost, while Highway 1 remains closed between Ashcroft and Boston Bar. BC Hydro crews are replacing burned power poles to restore regional electricity.
- Environment Canada forecasts rising temperatures between 33 C and 35 C through Wednesday, which may increase fire activity in the coming days. Officials remain vigilant as warmer conditions could challenge containment efforts.
