Somalia: Puntland Seizes Bases in Galkayo, Bosaso
Puntland police said more than 100 people were arrested and weapons, vehicles and military equipment were seized in the planned security operation.
On Wednesday, heavily armed Puntland forces launched an operation against a military camp near the airport in northern Galkayo, seizing control from troops who recently pledged allegiance to Mogadishu.
Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni alleged the federal government recently transported weapons and troops to the camp, claiming the assault serves as a "clear message to anyone working against the Puntland government."
Following the operation, Puntland police reported the arrest of more than 100 people and the seizure of weapons, vehicles, and military equipment, including firearms and police uniforms.
Heavy fighting involving mortar rounds forced families to abandon homes near the frontline, though resident Mohamed Jama confirmed the violence ended by Wednesday with neither the federal government nor rival commanders issuing responses.
Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud's decision to change the constitution in March has sparked opposition concerns, as parties view the reforms as a power grab threatening Puntland's stability.
In Somalia, a violent attack orchestrated by forces from the semi-autonomous region of Puntland struck on Wednesday, 5 August, in the morning, the Galkayo camp, where rival forces allied to the federal government were present. While Puntland claims to have taken possession of the camp 700 km from Mogadishu, this offensive marks a further escalation of tensions between the regional leaders and the Somali government.
