Last-Gasp Solberg Error Gives Evans WRC Title in Dramatic Rally Sardinia Finale
Solberg’s late error gave Evans the championship after a final-stage duel that left the Welshman as Britain’s first WRC champion since 2001.
On Sunday, Elfyn Evans clinched his first World Rally Championship title at Rally Italia Sardegna, becoming Britain's first world champion since 2001 competing for Toyota.
The title fight turned dramatically when teammate Oliver Solberg lost control two corners from the final stage finish, careering down a bank and surrendering the bonus points needed for the championship.
After five runner-up finishes in six years, Evans finally secured the crown, joining Englishman Richard Burns and Scottish driver Colin McRae as the only three British WRC winners in history.
Nine-Time world champion Sebastien Ogier called Evans the "deserved champion," while Toyota sporting director Kaj Lindstrom said the team was "really happy" for him after the dramatic finale.
This victory concludes the current technical era, with new regulations taking effect next year; final standings left Evans on 243 points, ahead of Solberg on 238 and Sami Pajari on 237.
