Social media restrictions for under-16s even if no ban, minister says
Ministers say they will set age or functionality limits after a consultation, with Parliament pressing for tougher action to protect children online.
On Monday, Education Minister Olivia Bailey told the Commons the government will "impose some form of age or functionality restrictions" on social media for under-16s, with MPs supporting the motion 272–64.
The House of Lords voted in support of a social media ban for under-16s for a fourth time on Monday, forcing a standoff with the Commons over the Children's Wellbeing and Schools Bill.
Technology Secretary Liz Kendall aims to legislate by year's end, with a "progress report" due three months after royal assent and regulations expected within 12 months.
Conservative shadow education secretary Laura Trott called the commitment a "huge step forward in keeping children safe," while Liberal Democrat Munira Wilson questioned the timeline, noting it could take up to 21 months.
Esther Ghey, whose 16-year-old daughter Brianna Ghey was murdered in 2023, told MPs the UK can "do a better job" than Australia's ban, as officials continue consulting on protective mechanisms.
