Former Australia Captain Ryan Absent From Socceroos Squad for Brazil Friendlies
Popovic named 16 World Cup squad members and seven uncapped players as Australia prepares for two home matches against Brazil.
On Friday, Socceroos coach Tony Popovic omitted former captain Maty Ryan from his squad for upcoming friendlies against Brazil, naming seven uncapped players to build toward the 2027 AFC Asian Cup.
Popovic emphasized long-term planning, stating, "We have picked a squad with an eye on the Asian Cup," as he transitions away from older veterans to accelerate player development.
While omitting Ryan, Popovic confirmed the 34-year-old remains available, calling up uncapped St Mirren goalkeeper Jacob Chapman to compete with established number-one Patrick Beach and Paul Izzo.
Australia hosts the five-time world champions in Townsville on September 25 and Brisbane four days later, though key defenders Jordan Bos, Cameron Burgess, and Cristian Volpato remain sidelined with injuries.
Sixteen players from the World Cup squad return for this two-match series, serving as critical preparation before the Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia early next year.
