Snow Pack Melted in South Okanagan Community

The Okanagan community’s two measurement sites showed no snow, after a winter when levels were below normal for most of the season.

  • On May 1, the District of Summerland recorded no snow at the Summerland Reservoir and Isintok Lake measurement sites, confirming complete snowpack melt across both locations.
  • Following high measurements earlier in the year, snow levels remained below normal at both sites throughout most of the winter and spring, continuing a downward trend.
  • The Okanagan has observed dry conditions every year since 2022, and while no snow appeared at Summerland Reservoir one year earlier, consecutive dry years have intensified the current early melt.
  • Drought Level 3 necessitates reduced water usage for agriculture, which accounts for around 80 per cent of community consumption, affecting cemeteries, parks, and golf courses.
  • Summerland manages 11 reservoirs with a total capacity of 14,303 million litres, having implemented water-saving measures after reaching Drought Level 4 in late November.
