Blue Tits Set up Nest in Village’s Ashtray
The birds have returned to the same ashtray for several years, and hall staff plan a sign to warn smokers and protect the nest.
Smokers have been banned from using an ashtray at Astley and Dunley village hall, near Stourport-on-Severn, Worcestershire, after a family of blue tits took up residence inside the bin.
Village hall booking secretary Simone Taylor revealed the birds have returned to the same spot annually for several years, though staff were unaware of their arrival this year until recently.
According to cleaner Hazel Spicer, the blue tits previously removed cigarette butts to make room for nesting materials, and they have nested quietly despite campers visiting the site.
Management will install signage to ensure visitors, especially smokers, remain aware of the birds' presence while protecting toddler groups and other hall activities from disturbance.
Staff expect the blue tits to vacate within the next month, as the hall's light schedule currently poses no conflict with the nesting family's timeline.
