Premier's Alberta Next panel closes out tour in tense Calgary town hall
The Alberta Next panel ended its tour after facing criticism and an apology over a moderator’s inappropriate comment to a teen amid tensions on teachers’ strike and Ottawa grievances.
- On Monday night, Premier Danielle Smith's Alberta Next panel closed its cross-province tour in Calgary as about 1,100 people attended at a south Calgary event centre for a final chance to speak.
- The panel was created earlier this year after Prime Minister Mark Carney's federal election win to reassess Alberta's relationship with Ottawa and review six proposals including immigration control and a provincial police service.
- Moderator Bruce McAllister interrupted a 16-year-old boy who tried to ask about the pending provincewide teachers' strike and told him his parents should spank him, then apologized on social media.
- Calls for accountability followed the social-media spread of the exchange as Opposition NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi said an apology isn't sufficient and demanded McAllister be fired and Smith apologize to the boy.
- Stephen Buffalo said the proposals have a path forward but require strong leadership, as the panel prepares for Wednesday's telephone town hall to assess which move to a referendum or are implemented.
