Sir Richard Branson's Wife Cause of Death Shared at Inquest
An upcoming inquest will examine whether blood thinners or TED stockings could have prevented the 80-year-old’s death, coroner Professor Fiona Wilcox said.
A pre-inquest hearing revealed Lady Joan Sarah Drummond Branson, 80, died from a blood clot on November 24, 2025, at London Bridge Hospital following a fall-induced back injury sustained two weeks earlier.
Senior Coroner Professor Fiona Wilcox told the court the upcoming September inquest will determine if Lady Branson wore Thrombo-Embolus Deterrent stockings and whether Heparin could have prevented her death.
Daughter Holly Branson told the court the family does not blame anyone for her mother's death, saying, "The doctors saved her life three years ago, giving us all three more years together."
Lady Branson, who was married to Sir Richard Branson for nearly 50 years, had a documented history of blood clots dating back to at least 2010.
An expert haematologist will present findings at the September inquest, while Lady Branson's philanthropic legacy includes her support for premature birth charities following the loss of their first child, Clare Sarah.
