Sipekne’katik First Nation Bans N.S. Premier, Justice Minister From All Band Lands
Sipekne'katik First Nation banned Nova Scotia leaders from reserve lands with $50,000 fines, citing provincial overreach after a crackdown on illegal cannabis dispensaries.
- On Tuesday, Sipekne'katik First Nation chief and council declared no provincial jurisdiction and banned Premier Tim Houston, Attorney General Scott Armstrong, and Leah Martin from band lands.
- Following a provincial review that found at least 118 illegal outlets, Scott Armstrong directed police last week to crack down on illegal cannabis dispensaries and sought co-operation from 13 Mi'kmaq chiefs.
- Chief Michelle Glasgow said Premier Tim Houston has not visited the community and accused his provincial government of forming laws that direct harm and violate constitutionally protected Mi'kmaw rights, adding he has `lost all credibility as the province's elected Premier'.
- Sipekne'katik said trespassers face a $50,000 fine, and other First Nations aligned actions include Pictou Landing First Nation Chief Tamara Young ordering RCMP not to enter and the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi'kmaw Chiefs criticizing the provincial letter.
- First Nations cannabis advocates say police action threatens Mi'kmaq sovereignty, while the province upholds the Cannabis Control Act and Scott Armstrong said treaty-rights claims `has not been established' on Dec. 4.
