Singapore to set up new national space agency on Apr 1
The agency will build Singapore’s space R&D, industry, satellite operations, and legislation to capture growth in a sector with 70 local companies and 2,000 employees.
- On April 1, the National Space Agency of Singapore will be established under the Ministry of Trade and Industry, announced at the inaugural Space Summit on Feb 2.
- MTI said NSAS will lead efforts to tap a global space economy projected at US$1.8 trillion by 2035, supporting applications like port operations and environmental monitoring.
- Ngiam Le Na will lead NSAS as chief executive, bringing experience from DSO National Laboratories, while the government co-owns three Earth observation satellites with ST Engineering and has invested over S$200 million since 2022 through the Space Technology Development Programme.
- The agency will develop legislation designed to be pro-innovation and pro-business while meeting space safety standards and expand partnerships with the European Space Agency and IN-SPACe.
- Singapore's space industry comprises around 70 space companies employing 2,000 professionals, while the inaugural Space Summit attracted over 330 participating organisations and has been renewed for a second iteration.
