Sindh declares public holidays for Muharram 9, 10
The holidays will cover five-day and six-day workweek offices, while Sindh and Karachi police tighten security and issue permit rules for processions.
On Monday, the federal and Sindh governments announced public holidays on June 25 and 26 to mark Ashura. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif declared the dates, corresponding to Muharram 9 and 10, 1448 A.H., as public holidays.
Ashura commemorates the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD, where the Prophet Muhammad's grandson, Imam Husain, was martyred. Observed by Shia Muslims, Muharram serves as a month of mourning and reflection worldwide.
These holidays apply to both five-day and six-day working week offices across the country. The Sindh government mandate includes autonomous bodies and local councils, though essential services will remain operational.
Authorities are issuing vehicle permits at the DIG Traffic Karachi Office through Tuesday for procession participants. Applicants must submit vehicle registration and driver identification to join main processions from 8th to 10th Muharram.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah directed officials to ensure foolproof security for processions and majalis. He ordered uninterrupted electricity supply and inter-agency coordination to facilitate mourners throughout the holy month.
