British Activist Jagtar Singh Johal Freed on Bail After Nine Years in Indian Custody
Reprieve said Johal was freed after a court order, but he still faces trial and restrictive bail conditions, including surrendering his passport.
On Thursday, October 1, Scottish activist Jagtar Singh Johal was released on bail from Tihar Jail in Delhi after nearly nine years of detention without conviction.
Indian authorities arrested Johal in 2017 in Punjab on alleged terror offenses he denies; the United Nations described his incarceration as 'arbitrary detention' and alleged he endured 'a form of psychological torture.'
Although the Delhi High Court granted bail last month, prison officials initially refused to release him until lawyers filed a habeas corpus petition and a judge warned of contempt of court.
Johal now faces stringent bail conditions: surrendering his British passport, banning public comments, and prohibiting participation in social media groups sharing 'anti-national' material while remaining on trial.
While his brother Gurpreet calls the release 'first steps to freedom,' Reprieve deputy executive director Dan Dolan warned Johal still faces a death sentence threat on remaining charges.
