Shoplifter killed Asda security guard during struggle over alcohol in Arbroath
Natasha Smith admitted causing a fatal heart attack to security guard Alun Harris-Richards during a theft of alcohol and assault on staff, court heard.
- On June 30, 2024, Natasha Smith admitted causing the death of Asda security guard Alun Harris-Richards, 61, former Royal Marine, who was pronounced dead at the Arbroath store.
- When alarms sounded, staff intercepted Smith at the self-service checkout carrying a reusable bag with two bottles she said she planned to sell to a pub.
- During the recorded struggle, Smith shouted, swore and continued to struggle with two female employees, grabbing Chloe Robinson and putting her hands around her neck, then threatening 'I will end you.'
- Ahead of a 5 March hearing, the judge adjourned sentencing for a background report, ordered Smith to remain remanded in prison, and warned only a "significant custodial sentence" is possible.
- Pathologists reported Mr Harris-Richards had a coronary artery condition, putting him at risk of sudden death, and Detective Chief Inspector Craig Kelly said it was `a shocking and tragic incident which resulted in the death of a man at his workplace`.
