Shopify board fighting shareholder push to create AI policy
On Tuesday, Shopify Inc. shareholders voted against creating an artificial intelligence policy at the company's annual general meeting.
The Shareholder Association for Research and Education proposed the mandate on behalf of the United Church pension plan in Canada, which holds a stake in Shopify.
Advocates argue generative AI systems may negatively impact human rights, while agentic AI can cause misinformation, manipulation, and erroneous automated transactions.
Shopify's board urged shareholders to reject the proposal, asserting that existing contracts and terms of service already establish sufficient guardrails for AI usage.
Although the final vote count remains undisclosed, Shopify utilizes AI for merchant operations, internal coding, product development, and staff performance reviews.
The implementation of this policy is supported by SHARE. The post Shopify urged to put in place a policy on the subject of AI appeared first on Les Affaires.
