'Shoot at me, not them': Furious Paraguay coach tells media to back off
Gustavo Alfaro took full responsibility for Paraguay’s 4-1 loss and said his players should be left alone before Friday’s match against Turkey.
Paraguay coach Gustavo Alfaro vented frustration on Thursday, demanding media stop criticizing his players following their 4-1 World Cup loss to the United States.
Alfaro acknowledged his team was "overwhelmed and steamrolled on all fronts" by the United States last week, arguing the squad must be left alone to focus on their Group D campaign.
Midfielder Matias Galarza joined his coach at the press conference, noting the U.S. loss was a "shock" and the team views Friday's match against Turkey as a must-win "final."
"They are here, representing seven million people," Alfaro said, urging journalists to defend the players as the team's "most valuable asset" and vowing to "take all of your punches."
Both Paraguay and Turkey face pressure in the San Francisco Bay Area on Friday after suffering opening-game defeats, with Turkey entering the fixture following a 2-0 loss to Australia.
Paraguay's coach, Gustavo Alfaro, again sent a message of unity and support to his footballers in the middle of the 2026 World Cup after the 4-1 defeat to the United States in the debut of group D.
Ahead of their second Group D match against Paraguay at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Turkish national football team coach Vincenzo Montella said, "We are very motivated to take to the field. I see the team as very focused and united."
