Shipping Companies Release Joint Letter Regarding Strait of Hormuz Fees
The groups said compulsory fees would raise shipping costs, threaten supply chains and weaken freedom of navigation under international law.
On Monday, eight maritime associations, including the International Chamber of Shipping , wrote to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez opposing proposed transit tolls in the Strait of Hormuz.
The associations warned that introducing compulsory transit charges, or "service fees that are a toll in all but name", would represent a significant departure from established international practice.
"Any additional costs imposed on maritime transport inevitably flow through international supply chains," the signatories explained, adding, "Ultimately, these impacts will carry a human cost, affecting livelihoods around the world."
Together, the groups urged the United Nations and International Maritime Organization to ensure that legal principles protecting international navigation through the Strait are "not weakened or altered".
Establishing such a precedent creates uncertainty for global commerce, as freedom of navigation remains the foundation of maritime governance and must not be compromised.
