Shinobu Sakamoto (69), a patient who contracted Minamata disease in a fetal stage, was born in 1956, the year Minamata disease was officially confirmed, in the Yudō district of Minamata City, where many of the victims were affected. When the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment was held in Stockholm, Sweden in 1972, she went there to appeal to the world about the seriousness of the pollution that occurred in Japan.
