Shinnecock Hills Golf Club course guide: Key holes to know at 2026 U.S. Open
The USGA plans 7,434 yards, wide fairways and slower greens as wind and severe contours shape the test for 156 players.
On Monday, Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, New York, began hosting the 126th U.S. Open, marking the sixth time the venue has staged this historic major championship.
Founded in 1891, the oldest incorporated golf club in the United States, Shinnecock Hills demands immense mental focus; constant winds and severely undulating greens create a test hardwired into the course layout.
USGA chief championships officer John Bodenhamer reported the widest fairways at a U.S. Open in 75 years, while the course will play at 7,434 yards to test precision shotmaking.
The USGA accepted 10,201 entries for the tournament, and a field of 156 players will compete with the field cut to the low 60 scores and ties after 36 holes.
Scottie Scheffler attempts to become the seventh player to complete the career Grand Slam, while Rory McIlroy has three top-10s in eight starts this season including his Masters win.
