Shelbourne bring Tolka to life in entertaining Ajax draw
On Thursday, Shelbourne drew 2-2 with Ajax at Tolka Park in Dublin during the UEFA Conference League third qualifying round, though the Dutch side advanced 5-2 on aggregate.
Manager John Russell fielded an understrength Shelbourne squad missing key players including Harry Wood, Sean Boyd, John Martin, Mipo Odubeko, Jack Henry-Francis and Ali Coote, while defender Paddy Barrett was unavailable.
Julian Brandt scored for Ajax on 20 minutes from a short corner, Evan Caffrey equalized within five minutes with a deflected strike, and Anton Gaaei restored the visitors' lead before half-time; VAR disallowed a Shelbourne goal for offside.
Shelbourne substitute Sean Moore sealed the draw by curling a left-footed strike around goalkeeper Maarten Paes with five minutes remaining on his 21st birthday.
While Ajax progressed to the UEFA Conference League playoffs, goalkeeper Eddie Beach made critical late saves to deny the visitors victory, earning widespread praise for manager Russell's severely understrength squad.
